As a childcare worker, I have a soft spot for all children and I believe starting kids out early to make better and healthier decisions is a way to improve their future.

 Michelle Obama is not only the First Lady, but also a children’s health advocate. She made the number 1 on the top 100 health and fitness influencers of 2012 on Greatist.com. Obama started her movement by planting the White House Kitchen Garden, the first garden since Eleanor Roosevelt’s first day according to the NY Times, and installing bee hives outside of the White House. During a roundtable interview she said, “I want to leave something behind that we can say, ‘Because of this time that this person spent here, this thing has changed.’ And my hope is that that’s going to be in the area of childhood obesity.” She then began “Let’s Move”, which according to the Let’s Move Website is a comprehensive initiative launch dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation.

Let’s move was put in place by Obama to put children on a healthier path by supporting healthy choices. This will include having healthier foods in schools, making sure every family has access to healthy food, and getting kids to become more active.

Michelle Obama published a book in 2012 called American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America. Obama describes her plan to use the garden as a way to call attention to the issue of the connection between the qualities of the food we eat everyday and the health of our children according to The NY Times.
